Injured Dauphin in Assateague Channel
Hi Everyone,
Update. The injured dauphin that was spotted hanging around in Assateague Channel on June 19th IS BACK.
As many of you know an injured dauphin was seen bobbing by our docks on the morning of June 19th. We were all concerned for the dauphin and were frantic to do something to help. After many phone calls and emails to try to get help for the injured dauphin - help was not able to come then. As the day lagged on the dauphin was moving along with the tide. Many locals and visitors to Chincoteague along East Side Road were trying to keep an eye out for the injured dauphin. But as night was coming on we all lost sight of the poor animal.
Then on June 25th, the dauphin was spotted again by Memorial Park. Many more phone calls and emails were exchanged with the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Program in Virginia Beach, VA. And finally the Rescue Team was able to get permission to come to Chincoteague. There were people all along the East Side of Chincoteague tracking the dauphin so that the Rescue Team could find the dauphin quickly.
So on June 25th three ladies from the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Team came up from Virginia Beach. They arrived around 11am with their inflatable Zodiac boat and the necessary gear to try to help the injured dauphin. The dauphin had moved with the tide up into the marshes by Piney Island just south of the Assateague Bridge. The Team went right to work by first trying to assess the injuries to the dauphin. They were able to ascertain that the dauphin had a large amount of netting caught on its’ dorsal fin and its’ tail. The netting was acting as an anchor on the dauphin, so that it was not able to swim at all.
After many hours and a lot of hard work, the Team was finally able to cut most of the netting off of the dauphin. The ladies estimated that the netting they were able to cut off the dauphin weighed approximately 15 to 20 pounds. They were also able to note that the dauphin had not been hit by a boat as was rumored. But that the dauphin did have a lot of scars on its’ body.
The team finished up here on Chincoteague around 2pm and were heading home to Virginia Beach. We had been asked to keep an eye out for the dauphin. And if we sighted it again to call down to the Stranding Response center to let them know the condition of the dauphin.
The team said they would be in touch with NOAA to make a determination of whether it would be feasible to rescue the dauphin.
I will let you know how things are going for the dauphin when I know them. Positive thinking helps.
